SPIRE Foundations: Sounds Sensible Letter Formation Procedures
- Show the Phonogram Card for the Letter.
- Teacher Says:
What is the name of the Letter? What sound does it make? - Display the traffic light enlarged paper.
- Teacher Says:
Watch as I print the letter__. - Teacher writes the letter.
- Teacher goes over how to print the letter using correct letter formation (the colored lines).
- Students trace the model; teacher explains the procedures for correct letter formation as they trace.
- Teacher writes the letter again; teacher repeats the directions.
- Each student comes to the board, traces the letter, says its name multiple times as they trace.
- Each student comes to the board again, one at a time, writes the letter beside the printed model, saying its name as they write.
- Teacher erases after each student finishes, before the next student comes up.
- Only the model will be visible as each student comes up.
- Model is removed. Students practice writing the letter multiple times on their practice page.
- Teacher displays clean traffic light chart.
- Teacher asks students to give her/him the directions for forming the letter as the teacher writes it on the chart.
- Teacher writes the letter as students provide directions.
